Hi Friends!
It has been over a month since our new family room remodel and I thought it was the perfect time for an update on how we have adjusted to living with our new space and our new family room sectional!
If you are new around here we remodelled our family room in September and completely change the layout and decor of our family room. The room was feeling very dark, crowded and overall wasn’t the space of well-being I had envisioned for my family.
Here are a few before pictures.

Do you see what I mean? There wasn’t anything wrong with the actual design of the space or layout of the furniture but it just didn’t feel relaxing to me and I knew I needed to make a change.

I partnered with my favourite furniture store Dufresne Furniture and Appliance to create my dream room space! I wanted to rework the room to feel more open and inviting, use neutral tones to create a sense of calm and airiness while also making the space comfortable and functional for my family.
After visiting the Dufresne store a few times I finalized my decision to go with the Alessandra Decor-Rest sectional in the custom colour grey.
The Alessandra Sectional was completely customizable and I was able to maximize the space in the room with the dimensions making it the perfect fit for the space.
Choosing fabric was a big deal as I was drawn to a fabric swatch that was exceptionally lighter than my previous couches. Let’s not forget, I have a teenager and two toddlers that would spend the majority of time in this space!
It was a BIG risk to go lighter and plenty of people thought I was nuts to get couches so light with three kids! haha.
Here is what the room looks like now!

THE UPDATE
Was the sectional and fabric a good choice? YES!!
We have now lived with the sectional for over a month and I can honestly say I am SO HAPPY with the fabric and shape of the sectional in our room!
I want to address a few key points that have helped make the transition easier.
- Sectional vs. Couches: Previously we had a sofa and loveseat in the space and I was initially concerned that a sectional would feel too bulky in the room. That has NOT been the case at all and the resounding opinion from us as well as friends and family is that the space seems even more inviting and open!
The clean lines and modern shape of the Alessandra sectional has given the room all the comfort without the heaviness of a big piece of furniture in the space. I do think the colour of fabric also helped the sectional feel less like a focal point and more like it blends into the space. - Fabric choice: This is a big one. So many people thought I would regret going this light with kids. Although the colour tends to look white in pictures, I can assure you in person it is a light grey with warm tones that works perfectly to compliment the feel of the room.
There are 2 things we did that take the pressure off allowing our family to enjoy the space to the fullest. The first is we firmly implemented a rule that we always had but had been a bit slack with in the past. The kids have to eat at the table (which they should be doing anyways) and wash their hands after they are excused BEFORE going into the family room to sit on the couch.
Another key decision was purchasing the after care warranty. Hands down this is the best decision and a huge relief knowing that if something was to get on the sectional that I wasn’t able to clean, there are options as far as replacing the cushion cover completely (if necessary0 covered in the warranty. I can’t tell you how much peace of mind this has provided and is so worth the cost especially if you have kids!

Our family room is by far our most used room in the house and where we spend the most amount of our time. It is super important that the room meets all our needs as a modern blended family. The addition of the Alessandra sectional to our space has expanded the use of our room more than I ever thought possible!

We have hosted a few parties and out of town guests since the room remodel as well and the Alessandra sectional has accommodated ample seating for big groups. The view from the sectional to the kitchen is also open making the space feel much less closed off.
In summary, I encourage you to not wait to have the space you’ve dreamed about! It is absolutely possible to create a space that is functional, kid friendly, and promotes a feeling of well-being for your whole family!
